Widget modal

The widget modal is the floating action panel that appears on the webpage (not inside the sidebar) when you select text or hover an image. It is the primary way to start context anchors and smart tags.

When it appears

Trigger	Condition
Text selection	You highlight text meeting the minimum selection threshold
Image hover	You hover an eligible <img> element
Proximity badge	You hover a badge near existing anchored content on the page

The widget does not appear on tabs that do not support context anchors (when the sidebar reports a non-anchor tab). If the sidebar is closed, the widget can still appear.

Step by step: text selection

1. Select a phrase or sentence on the page.
2. Wait briefly — the widget fades in near the selection.
3. The page may dim while you choose an action (anchor targeting mode).
4. Review the action grid:
   • Discuss — open compose with anchor
   • Task / Quote / Question / Bridge / Tag — shown; most are Coming soon
   • Bookmark — save instantly
   • React — pick ❤️ or open emoji strip
   • Share — share anchor link
   • Follow — follow anchor updates
   • Copy — copy anchor excerpt to clipboard
5. Tap an action.
6. For Discuss → sidebar opens → Unified compose modal with anchor chip.
7. For lightweight tags → action completes without compose.

Step by step: image hover

1. Hover over a content image (not tiny icons or decorative images).
2. Widget appears anchored to the image.
3. Same action grid as text selection.
4. Choose Discuss to attach the whole image as the anchor.

• Anchor summary link — opens the public anchor page when the anchor exists.
• Drag handle — reposition the widget; position is remembered for the session.
• React strip — tap ❤️ or expand for more emoji reactions.

After you choose an action

Discuss (composer)

1. Sidebar focuses Discuss.
2. Compose modal opens with:
   • Anchor chip showing excerpt
   • Smart tag type pre-set to Discuss
3. Write your message → Send.

Attach to existing message (no modal open)

If Discuss is open and a message is active:

1. Widget → Discuss.
2. Prompt: Attach to this message?
3. Confirm → anchor links to that message.
4. Choose another → drag anchor to a message row or use keyboard target ring.

Bookmark / React / Share / Follow

These run immediately — no compose modal. Check Bookmarks tab or message reactions to verify.

Proximity badge panel

Pages with existing anchors show badges near highlighted text or images.

1. Notice a small count badge on anchored content.
2. Hover the badge (or dwell briefly).
3. A panel opens with the same actions as the widget.
4. Use it to react, bookmark, or discuss without re-selecting text.

Tips

Tip	Detail
Drag to reposition	Grab the widget edge if it covers your selection
Esc cancels	In target mode, Esc clears pending anchor
Dim overlay	Only the webpage dims — the Canopi sidebar stays bright
Manage tags	From widget Manage action → opens Manage tab
